Manolis Stergiou was born in 1960. He studied Economics at the Athens University of Economics and Business and specialized in Business Administration.
In Velvento, where he lives permanently with his family, he has been active in the municipal and social matters since his youth. Furthermore, he has been supporting the idea of the “active citizen” and volunteer activities. He was a Municipal Advisor for eight years (1994 - 1998 and 1999 - 2002). He was elected as the Mayor for the 2003 - 2006 term with the Independent Coalition “Open Horizons”.
Also, from 1981 to 1994, he has been a member and President of the Board of Directors for the historical Cultural Club of Velvento.
During his first term as a Municipal Advisor, he performed the duties of the President of Velvento’s Culture Club. He worked on the European program “YOUTH” - an exchange program between young people from Velvento and others from around Europe - which is successfully in operation ever since.
During the period 2001 - 2003, he was the Treasurer for Velvento’s Athletic Union.
During the period 1996 - 1999, he served in the General Secretariat of Western Macedonia Region as the supervisor for matters of the Local Administration and European Regional Programs.
Professionally, he is a member of the Local Hellenic Post administration. In the period 1987 - 1993, he was a member of the ELTA Employees Union Administration in the prefecture of Kozani.
He is married to Stella Tsiakmaki and they have four children.
